Hiwar A/V: A Choreographic Exploration of Pearl Diving Music
I had the opportunity to choreograph and perform a 30-minute piece as part of Zahed Sultan’s performance, *Hiwar A/V,* in Kuwait. This performance was deeply inspired by Zahed Sultan’s ongoing fascination with traditional pearl diving music from the Arabian Gulf—a genre steeped in themes of belonging, togetherness, loss, and separation. The music, known for its minimal yet powerful qualities, evokes a profound connection to both time and space.
Zahed Sultan has continually explored the rich cultural and historical significance of pearl diving music, presenting it across various art forms and mediums. His work engages deeply with the culture and customs surrounding this music, emphasizing its deep roots in the Gulf and its intricate links to African heritage. Through *Hiwar A/V,* Zahed aims to modernize the forms of pearl diving music, recontextualizing it for contemporary audiences while honoring its rich legacy.
My choreographic contribution to *Hiwar A/V* was designed to embody the essence of this unique musical tradition. The movements were crafted to mirror the music’s raw emotional power, creating a dialogue between the physical form and the auditory experience. By integrating modern dance with traditional elements, the performance sought to bridge the past and present, offering a fresh perspective on the timeless themes embedded in pearl diving music.
This collaboration allowed me to delve into the intersection of music and movement, exploring how the rhythms and themes of an ancient art form can be translated into contemporary dance. The performance was a celebration of cultural heritage and a reflection on how the art of pearl diving continues to resonate with modern audiences.
