Crossing
Crossing emerged from choreographer Abdelhadi Abunahleh’s reflections on the concept of transcendence and his pursuit of infinity that surpasses the ordinary. By exploring a variety of mental and emotional states triggered by life’s disruptions—displacement, despair, depression, and the journey of healing and recovery—the work invites participants to delve into liminal spaces, the in-between realms, and to remain open to what may emerge.
Visually and thematically rooted in Islamic arts, “Crossing” experiments with the intersection of geometry and ritual, mathematical precision and sanctity. The performance combines movement, light, sound, and perspective play, with the rhythms and repetitions of the dance expressing the desire for transformation and the variability of this process. The cyclical synchronization and divergence of the performers’ movements embody the power of bliss and surrender to unity in the process of healing and transcendence, offering an entry point for the audience to participate in the unfolding ritual. It is an invitation to open up and immerse oneself in the transitional space, suspended between two worlds.
At its core, “Crossing” is a multi-sensory invitation to re-examine the boundaries of everyday life, connect with the power of unity, experiment with the potential of rituals, and reflect on possible transformations. The convergence of these elements captures the contrasting emotions that exist in harmony and tension throughout the process, promising a thought-provoking artistic journey.
Through ritualistic rhythms, “Crossing” connects the movement of the individual and the collective within an ever-changing system of sacred geometric symbols. The evolution of this journey offers a profound reflection on the complexities of human emotions and the transformative potential of movement.
