CCC
Off Stage, On Screen: Choreography Creation Camp and Exhibition
In the midst of ‘Covid’ the global public health crisis, Studio 8, an Amman-based dance company led by choreographer and artistic director Hadi, launched the “Choreography Creation Camp” (CCC). Co-curated by Hadi and visual artist Ren Shallman, this initiative was designed to support emerging Jordanian Artists, choreographers, dance makers, and performance directors in sustaining their creativity during challenging times. The program aimed to help participants find new ways to connect with audiences, even as physical distancing became the norm.
A New Wave of Artistic Expression
The CCC residency resulted in the creation of nine new performance pieces, captured in short video formats. These performances, many of which are still works in progress, reflect the healing power of art and the resilience of the human spirit. Despite the physical separation, these pieces demonstrate the ability of art to connect and resonate with audiences on a deep, emotional level.
Exhibition and Online Premiere
In addition to the videos, an exhibition was held at Al Balad Theater, showcasing the exciting moments of dance creation through photography. This exhibition provided a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process, offering insight into the artistic journeys of the participants.
The CCC program was structured in two parts:
– Part 1: Focused on training in choreography and skill development in directing, researching, presentation, leadership, and production, conducted both online and in physical spaces.
– Part 2: Provided hands-on production experience and mentoring, culminating in the creation of the nine performance videos.
These videos premiered virtually in December 2020, allowing a broader audience to experience the innovative work produced during the residency.
Participants and Mentors
The 2020 CCC participants included a diverse group of individual artists and art collectives, such as Abd Al Nabulsi, Rana Madanat, Sarah Raji, Majdal PDT, and Art Vision. These artists were guided by a team of local and international mentors, including choreographers, visual artists, and performers like Angela Rabaglio, Enrico Paglialunga, and Husam Abed.
A Collaborative Effort
The success of the CCC program is a testament to the power of collaboration and the importance of providing platforms for emerging artists to grow and thrive. By bringing together local and international mentors, the program fostered an environment of learning and innovation, paving the way for a new wave of Jordanian performing arts.
